Consumer law is governed by Consumer Protection Act, 2002. Consumer rights are the rights which are given to the consumer to protect him/her from being cheated by a salesman/ manufacturer. Consumer protection laws are designed to ensure fair trade competition in the market and not trader could be involved in unfair trade practice or fraud.

Basically Consumer Protection Law is designed to protect businesses that are engaged in fraud or illegal/ unfair practices from gaining an advantage over competitors. Consumer protection laws are a form of government regulation which aims to protect the rights of the consumers.

Consumer is defined as a person who acquires goods or services for his/her own purposes rather than for resale or use in production and manufacturing. Consumer interests can also be protected by promoting competition in the market which directly and indirectly serves consumers, consistent with economic efficiency.

Consumer who has faced illegal trade while buying the product or is cheated by any of the manufacturer or service provider then he is free to lodge a complaint or file a complaint against them in a District Dispute Redressal Forum, State Commission and in National Dispute Redressal Consumer Forum.

Jurisdiction of the complaint is decide by its pecuniary jurisdiction, like if complaint involving cost and compensation less than 20 lakhs then the complaint will be filed in District Consumer Forum otherwise it will be filed before State Consumer Forum and if the amount of cost and compensation is above 1 Crore then complaint shall directly be filed in the National Dispute Redressal consumer forum. Otherwise appeal can be filed in the appellate forums.
